Acts 2: 42-47 tells the story of the very beginnings of the church. After the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the church of new believers looked like this:
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread the prayers. . . .they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day-by-day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. [NRSV translation]
According to scripture, the early church focused on the ministry areas of: 1) Studying scripture 2) Fellowship 3) Worship 4) Prayers 5) Giving to the poor and those in need
Ministry included ways to serve as well as ways to grow closer to God. The ministry of the new church was simple and served as a means of sharing the gospel to those outside of the church.
Today, at First UMC Trussville, ministry focuses on similar lines: 1) Bible Study 2) Fellowship 3) Worship 4) Praying/ prayer groups 5) Missions
